Man arrested after trying to steal lead from riot ravaged furniture store House of Reeves

A MAN has been arrested after trying to steal lead from the roof of a furniture store ravaged by fire during the riots.

Firefighters and police spent four hours trying to coax the man down from the roof of House of Reeves, on Reeves Corner, this morning.

Police initially had to use a helicopter with thermal imaging technology to locate the intruder after he was spotted on the roof at 3.50am.

Fire crews from Croydon and Wallington deployed ladders and equipment to help him down but he eventually left the roof through the store and was arrested.

House of Reeves owner Trevor Reeves told the Advertiser this morning that the store itself had also been broken into.

He said: "I don’t know much about what happened yet other than someone has been caught on the roof nicking lead and has now been nicked.

"It would appear there is a lot more damage than we first thought. Someone has actually broken in to the store and ransacked our back office."

Croydon station manager Peter Rickard said: "we were called to assist the police with a gentleman in a precarious position at Reeves Corner. we assisted the police in making the area safe and then resolving the incident, which is now being investigated by the police.

"There was difficulty in getting him down. It would appear he was reluctant. It was dark and we didn’t exactly know where the individual was. the police helicopter had to use heat seeking to find him.

"although we did pitch some equipment we didn’t actually use it. after four hours the man left the roof on his own and was arrested.

"It was an unusual incident but we did well. we were there in three minutes and made sure no one was injured."

Firefighters left the scene at 7.50am this morning.

House of Reeves, one of Croydon’s oldest businesses, lost its flagship building during the riots on August 8 last year.

It’s second site, now fenced off by hoardings made up of images depicting the store’s rich history, was completely destroyed by fire.

The company is so iconic that the road, Reeves Corner, was named after it, followed by the nearby tram stop.

Fantastic Holdings ltd on Tuesday said it would open another four or five stores in the second half after net profit rose 35 per cent in the six months to December 25, 2011, up from $9.8 million in the prior corresponding period.

Managing director Julian Tertini said the group, which owns the fantastic Furniture brand, was confident of delivering profit and sales growth for the full year despite challenging trading conditions in the retail sector.

"It is encouraging to see January and early February sales being more positive, trading ahead of the corresponding period in 2011. however, we still see overall trading conditions as challenging in the near future," mr Tertini said.

Fantastic Holdings was in a sound position compared to other retailers in the current environment," mr Tertini said.

The group said the main driver of its first half profit result was an improvement in gross margins, which lifted to 48.6 per cent from 46.2 per cent.

Sales revenue rose 3.4 per cent to $227.6 million, from $220.6 million.

Chief executive Mark Garwood said supply chain efficiencies and a focus on quality had helped improve margins.

"rather than continue to drop prices we put a lot of effort into improving the quality of product," mr Garwood said.

The company predicts small furniture chains could become casualties this year after Sleep City went into administration in 2012.

Fantastic opened four new outlets during the half year, taking the total number to 132 nationally.

The group plans to be able to be able to conduct sales transactions online by the end of 2012 and to enhance its supply chain and manufacturing capability.

It said four of its five businesses delivered improved profit growth.

President Richard Nixon renamed the room the Roosevelt Room to honor both presidents. It is now used as a conference room and features a multimedia center for presentations, according to the White House website.
